Q2 Week 8: How do we understand the author's purpose in an argument?

RI.9-10.6: Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.
RI.9-10.8: Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning.
W.9-10.7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation
Day 1 of 3:
Do Now Journal __ : Think about children (defined as any person under the age of 18, unless an earlier age of majority is recognized by a country’s law) around the world. If all nations could agree on a set of laws that concern the treatment of children, what kinds of laws do you think would appear in such a set?

Class Activities:
1. Listen and Discussion: why are we learning this?
2. Graph and Discussion: Are any of these statistics surprising? Are there any that you would like to investigate further? 
3.Listen and Annotate Argument; "After Reading: Research Question"

HW: Research Question and Source Log Due Friday

Day 2 of 3:
Do Now: If you had to take a stand on the importance of memories, what might your position be?

Class Activities:
1. Review and Annotate the SAT essays
2. "After Reading Question" What revisions would you recommend to strengthen the arguments?

Day 3 of 3:
Do Now: What further research will you have to do to answer your research question/support your claim?
